BAPTISM & THE BIBLE ALONE by steve finnell

What would your conclusion be about water baptism is you used the Bible and the Bible alone as your source?

Is baptism synonymous with immersion, pouring or sprinkling?

Matthew 3:13-17.....16 After being baptized, Jesus came immediately from the water...(NASB)

Was Jesus in the water to be sprinkled with water, having water poured on Him, or to be immersed in water?

Mark 1:4-5...5...and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River...(NASB)

Were they in the Jordan River to be sprinkled, poured on, or immersed? Why the river?

John 3:23 John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there...(NASB)

Did John need much water so he could sprinkle, pour, or immerse?

Acts 8:36-38 And he ordered the chariot to stop; and they both went down into the water, Philip as well as the eunuch, and he baptized him.(NASB)

Why did they look for water to sprinkle or pour, did they not travel with water? Did they both go into the water so the eunuch could be sprinkle, poured, or immersed?

Romans 6:3-4....4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death...

Can you be buried with a sprinkle, buried by pouring, or are you buried by immersion in water?

Colossians 2:12...having been buried with Him in baptism...(NASB)

Would you say be buried with Him in a sprinkle, buried by pouring, or buried by immersion?

----------------------------------------------------

If you used the Bible alone what would you say was the purpose of water baptism?

Acts 2:38-41 Peter said to them, "Repent and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit......40..."Be saved from this perverse generation!" 44 So then, those who received the word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand  souls.(NASB)

Were they baptized as a testimony of their faith, or were they baptized to have sins forgiven, receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, and be saved?

Mark 16:16 He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved...(NASB)

Were they baptized in order to be saved, or were they baptized because they were already saved? (Note: Shall be, means future tense, not past tense.)

Is water baptism essential to salvation. (Other Scriptures to consider Acts 22:16, John 3:5, Romans 6:3-7, Colossians 2:8-13, 1 Peter 3:21)

If you used the Bible and the Bible alone, what would be your conclusion?
