KNOWING GOD'S WORD BY STEVE FINNELL

Is studying commentaries, creed books, and catechisms written by men, what God had in mind in order for Christians to understand His word? Why would a new Christian, who has the indwelling gift of the Holy Spirit, need to read anything other than the Scriptures to learn about God and His plan for mankind? Would not the Holy Spirit  be a more reliable teacher of the Bible than reading opinions written by men? Mature Christians often times are confused by man-made doctrines; how much more would that apply to the novice Christian? Yes, there is some truth in Bible commentaries, creed books, and catechisms, but why not study the book that is all truth and nothing but the truth, the Bible?

Matthew 22:23-29 .......But Jesus answered and said to them, "You are mistaken, not understanding the Scriptures nor the power of God.

The Sadducees questioned Jesus about marriage and the resurrection. Jesus did not tell them they were in error because they did not know the facts found in the Sadducee's Bible Commentary. JESUS SAID THEY DID NOT UNDERSTAND THE SCRIPTURES!

Acts 17:10-11 The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived, they went into the synagogue  of the Jews. 11 Now these were more nobleminded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.

You will notice the Bereans did not search the "Pharisee's Catechisms" daily to see if Paul was telling the truth.

Galatians 1:11-12 For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received from man, nor was I taught it, but i received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ.

The apostle Paul did not get the gospel message from a man-made creed book. Paul's words were by direct revelation from Jesus. Paul's word were in fact Scripture.

Ephesians 3:3-5 that by revelation there was made known to me the mystery, as I wrote before in brief. 4 By referring to this, when you read you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which in other generations was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed to His holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit;

The apostles and prophets learned the mystery of Christ as revealed by the Holy Spirit. They did not learn it from Bible commentaries, creed books, and catechisms written by the Pharisees, Sadducees, and high priests. They did not learn it from history books written by Joesphus. The apostles and prophets learned from the Holy Spirit.

WE HAVE THE INERRANT WORD OF GOD. WE HAVE THE INDWELLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. WHY WOULD WE WANT TO RELY ON BOOKS WRITTEN BY MEN AS OUR SOURCE FOR TRUTH OR THE EXPLANATION OF THE TRUTH?

IF ALL MEN USED THE BIBLE AND THE BIBLE ALONE AS THEIR SOURCE FOR TRUTH, THERE WOULD NOT BE 20,000, MORE OR LESS, DIFFERENT DENOMINATIONS, INDEPENDENT CHURCHES, AND GROUPS OF CHURCHES ALL CLAIMING TO HAVE AND BE PRACTICING THE TRUTH.

JESUS ONLY DIED FOR ONE CHURCH! HIS CHURCH!
